Geoffrey of Monmouth

Geoffrey was an early historian born about 1100. He may have been born or educated in Monmouth but later moved to Oxford and in 1156 becoming Bishop of St. Asaph.

His great achievement was to write the “History of the Kings of Britain” from the British (i.e. Celtic) point of view. Though no longer acceptable as history, his glorification of King Arthur created a powerful legend, still popular today. He also introduced king Lear and King Cole into literature.
